Camp Activities

Your camp fee pays for lodging for two nights, 4 meals starting with breakfast Saturday, two snacks, dishwashers, and riflery supplies.  Weather permitting, you may enjoy snow play, archery, riflery, the observatory, a ropes challenge course, hiking, and the high wall.  The sponsoring circle will provide a craft.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding will be available on a rental basis: $15 per horse per ride payable in cash to the wrangler.  Children must be at least 6 years old and around 44” tall to ride.  Sign-ups to ride will be in the dining hall, starting Saturday morning 7:00 a.m.  It works best when leaders sign-up their circle members so they all ride at the same time.  If you sign-up and later decide not to ride, then cross off your name so others may sign-up.

Friday Night

Maps and directions to camp plus a list of recommended items to bring will only appear in December Compass.  Save them for the March camp-out.

Suggestion: carpool to camp.  People start arriving in camp mid-afternoon or thereafter on Friday.  When arriving, park in the Camp Oakes parking lot and then go to the dining hall to check in with Sierra.  Cabin and Kitchen Patrol (KP) Assignments along with the weekend activity schedule will be posted there on the bulletin boards. Sign ups for campfire, horses, and observatory will be there starting Saturday morning.

After you unload your car at the dorms, park it in the Camp Oakes parking lot or other designated area.  Please do not park next to the dorms.

The observatory may be open (weather permitting) on a drop-in basis Friday night.  There will be an open or closed notice posted in the dining hall Friday evening.

Remember that you must provide your own dinner Friday night.  Suggestions include bringing your own dinner, stopping to eat on the way to camp, and driving into Big Bear to eat.  You may want to arrange to have dinner with your tribe members in Big Bear.  However, camp will provide a snack and beverage for you both nights in the dining hall.

 Campfire

All circles are encouraged to participate at campfire with a song, story, or skit.  Please take time during a tribe meeting or at camp to plan and rehearse one.  Remember:  creativity and silliness evoke smiles, laughter, good feelings, and provide for lasting memories!

Click here to find skits, songs, etc

Staff and program volunteers make important announcements before meals are served.  Silence during announcements is respectful, aids in understanding what is being said, and helps to get through them quickly, thus helping to ensure that the food is served on time and warm.  The longest set of announcements occurs at the first meal.  Be respectful.

Regarding serious illness or injury, see any of the Camp Oakes staff or your key leader.  First Aid supplies will be located in the dining hall.

Camp Rules

·         Please do not litter . . . keep Camp Oakes clean.  The cabins are clean when you arrive.

·         Please leave them as clean or cleaner when you leave camp to return home.

·         Beware of icy conditions – walk carefully; don't run.  When covered with ice, stay off the lake.

·         Do not throw rocks in camp.

·         Smoking in camp is only allowed on the patio area outside the Dining Hall.

·         Do not bring firearms or ammunition into camp.

·         Alcohol and gambling are not allowed in camp.

Refund Policy for Camps

On the behalf and at the direction of the Base Camp, an authorized YMCA staff person signs contracts leasing two camps each year: YMCA of Greater Long Beach Camp Oakes and Glendale Family YMCA Camp Fox.  Each contract guarantees the lessor a minimum number of attendees at a specified dollar rate – our financial contractual obligation.

Since camp fees are deposited into the Base Camp checking account and not the YMCA's, this is the Base Camp refund policy.  Refunds will only be made after the camp-out has past.  If we meet our financial contractual obligation with the fees collected from those who attend camp, the refund amount will be the amount paid minus a $25 cancellation fee.  If we do not meet our contractual obligation with the fees collected from those who attend camp, the refund amount will be adjusted downward.

Winter Travel:

The following are safety suggestions for mountain driving in the winter:

1.      Carry anti-freeze, properly fitted chains, flares, flashlights, small shovel, map, blankets, and a first aid kit for all vehicles.

2.      Be careful on icy roads, Cal-Trans does a good job keeping the roads clear and we keep camp roads clear as well.

3.      Always check road and snow conditions ahead of time.

For road conditions, call Cal-Trans: 1-800-427-7623 or click here

Big Bear road/snow Info: 909-866-SNOW or click here

 Bedding:

Camp Oakes does not provide linen service.  Plan on bringing a sleeping bag or sheets and blankets and a pillow if desired.

Camp Fox

Activities

Come and experience oceanfront camping at its best!  Camp Fox is loosely structured, in that you individually or as a tribe choose your own activities.  What is there to do at camp?  A craft, hiking, fishing, swimming, Frisbee golf, row boating, kayaking, a ropes course (age 10 & above), softball, football, archery, volleyball, basketball, etc.  Or just hang out!

Campfire

Campfire Saturday night is always a highlight.  All tribes are encouraged to participate with a song, skit, or story. (Find some here).  Please plan ahead and rehearse!  Creativity and silliness will bring smiles, fun, laughter, good feelings, and lasting memories for all.

Cost

Cost is $120 per person and payment-in-full is required to register.  You can sign up at the Y starting Friday, March 1.  The fee covers 5 meals (3 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday), 2 snacks, and use of all facilities.  If you decide to not attend, notify Sierra Childress immediately, since she makes cabin assignments and needs an accurate headcount from each circle.  Financial assistance is available for families unable to afford the full cost of camp.  Please contact Sierra for more information.

Facilities

There are two types of cabins: 15 open-air oceanfront cabanas with roofs but no walls and 15 enclosed cabins with roofs and walls.  Each cabana or cabin sleeps 12.  There are two sets of restrooms, each with showers, sinks, and commodes.  There is a small camp store that sells candy, soda, film, etc.

Catalina Express in San Pedro

The Catalina Express boat leaves San Pedro Friday evening.  You should arrive at the terminal no later than 5 p.m.  It will cost $20 to park there for the weekend.  The boat leaves early Sunday afternoon and returns to San Pedro around (time TBA).  There will be no refunds for those who arrive late, miss the boat, and have to purchase tickets at full fare.  Missing our boat means you have to first go to Avalon and then rent a sea taxi.  Food and drink can be purchase aboard the boat, but the concession lines are usually long.  You may want to bring a snack for the ride over.

Directions to Catalina Express

Take Harbor Freeway (110) south, exit Harbor Blvd., and proceed on exit ramp to terminal.

Take Ocean Blvd. through Long Beach, drive over the Desmond and Vincent Thomas bridges, exit Harbor Blvd. and proceed on exit ramp to terminal (under Vincent Thomas bridge).

What to Bring

Sleeping bag, pillow, ear plugs, warm jacket, weekend clothing, towel, toiletries, flashlight, and any necessary medication.  Tennis shoes are strongly recommended because the beach is rocky.  Suggestion:  bring hats, sunscreen, swimsuits, beach chairs, ear plugs, Frisbees, camera with film, reading material, baseball mitts, snorkeling equipment, and fishing equipment plus bait and license.  Bring only what you can carry on the boat.  Dollies or handcarts are not permitted on board.  Catalina Express will not let you board with one!  However, they will allow you to make an additional trip to the dock to retrieve your belongings.

Alcoholic beverages and gambling are NOT allowed at camp.
