Circles earn Circle of the Year points for sponsoring and/or participating in Nation events. The winning Circle receives Circle of the Year patches, a Circle party, no KP at Camp Oakes or Camp Fox and choice of cabins at Camp Fox. Only an honor circle can win Circle of the Year. Click here to see the points chart.
An Honor Circle is any circle that completes a community service project. The project must be done by both parents and children. This award will not replace the Circle of the Year award but would complement it. There will not be just one Honor Circle. Any Circle that accumulates the necessary points will receive the award. The Honor Circle with the most points at the end of the year will be Circle of the Year. How does this work? We will use the same point system. As you know, points are awarded for participating in and/or sponsoring events, working the Christmas tree lot, taking on the responsibility of Nation leadership, having Circle meetings and outings, and so forth. This will not change. What would be added is a community service project. This project will be mandatory for an Honor Circle award and for the Circle of the Year award.
Why
a community service project? The
YMCA Guide programs are not only a parent-child program, but a service
organization as well. The
idea of service is part of our official pledge:
“We,
parent and child, through friendly service to each other, to our family, to this
tribe, to our community, seek a world pleasing to the eye of the Great
Spirit.” What kind of project would qualify? That is really up to you. Projects could include a beach clean up, volunteering at a senior citizen center or homeless shelter, collecting toys for a toy drive, caroling at a nursing home during Christmas, etc. Your project should be done as a Circle with both parent and child participating.
